Since last year, traffic control installation cabinets in Breda are covered with beautiful images of old Breda. To our surprise, one of those cabinets was covered with a special photo from Saval history.

According to the city archives, it is a photo of the Saval factory on Haagweg, taken somewhere between 1935 and 1940. The photo shows two men assembling Saval smoke aspiration systems. At that time, the systems were frequently installed on large sea-going vessels.

At the time, the Netherlands was a shipbuilding nation, and Saval got a piece of it. A good example of this is the steamship Rotterdam, which was equipped with such a Saval smoke aspiration system. The ship has now returned to Rotterdam as a museum ship with the option of staying overnight. This was a "flagship" project for Saval and it was of course used in the documentation from that time.
