Certified extinguishing gas installations for the new metro line in Amsterdam

In samenwerking met Thyssenkrupp Liften hebben we detectie- en blusgasinstallaties voor 76 technische ruimten van de roltrappen van de nieuwe metrolijn in Amsterdam mogen ontwerpen en leveren.

Introductie

In cooperation with ThyssenKrupp we have designed and installed 76 detection and extinguishing gas installations in technical areas of the escalators of the new metro line in Amsterdam. In the technical areas of each escalator is the engine and control unit that regulates the escalator. The escalators are part of the escape route, even if the escalators are stationary.

Challenges; No room for a system

A technical area of an escalator is on average 1 - 2 m3 large, intended for the engine and control unit. There is little to no room for an additional fire protection installation. In addition, the technical area is not completely closed, which is actually a requirement for  extinguishing gas installations.

Approach: Flexible installation

The fire protection systems are specially designed for this specific application because of the lack of space. For these systems we used flexible connections for smoke detectors, alarm transmission and extinguishing hoses. The alarm signalling and technical reports are connected to the main safety system of the North/South line. Because it is built so flexibly, the systems can be completely removed during service and maintenance.

We did an live test in one of the escalators before the systems were installed. This in the presence of the City of Amsterdam, the client VIA and an inspection institution. After approval, we installed this unique solution in 76 technical areas at 8 stations of the North/South line.

Result; 76 certified systems

Together with Thyssenkrupp we have managed to engineer this solution and get it approved by the government and certified by a recognized inspection institution. In all 76 technical areas are detection systems installed and extinguishing gas installations in the the control units.
